Biography: Lynn Smiley holds two Bachelor's Degrees: one from the University of Rhode Island regarding human communication and the other from Nationally Accredited Johnson & Wales University in Equine Business Management & Riding. Lynn has also earned her USDF Bronze Medal. In addition, she is the recipient of several academic awards, including Magna Cum Laude status. This is accompanied by thirty years of practical equestrian experience including facilities management, assistant training, professional grooming, private riding, instructing, and program organization. It is the kind and gregarious nature of the horse which keeps Lynn cheerfully and passionately active in the industry. Lynn is a freelance instructor working out of her Brass Ring Farm and visiting several equestrian facilities in the RI and South West CT areas. Brass Ring currently offers boarding, training, lessons, and camp. For the past seven years, Lynn has sponsored the annual RI Dressage Schooling Show. This is a low pressure opportunity for local Young Riders to work toward attaining qualifying scores toward the end of year Championships. In addition, the Westwood YMCA will enjoy their fourth year of Children's Summer Horse Camp at Brass Ring. Her training is based on a strong foundation of classical theory with a strong work ethic. Lynn's personal riding discipline experience includes the following: hunt seat, balanced seat, amateur jumper, combined training, dressage, pleasure driving, in-hand work of long lining and lunging, and even a little western pleasure. She also possesses extensive knowledge regarding equine nutrition, and is also keenly knowledgeable in many aspects of equine breeding. Lynn has served as Assistant to Head Trainer at the internationally acclaimed Huntington Farm, under USDF Dressage Gold Medalist Deborah-Dean Smith. She has served as private groom and rider for USET Olympic Dressage Team Member and world-renowned trainer Jane Savoie. Lynn was Farm Manager of the Exclusive Brittany Farm Ltd. for USDF Judge and trainer Bill Warren. Additionally, Lynn was commissioned by the Exclusive Carnegie Abbey Club to be part of the Start Up Team as Equestrian Program Director from April 2000 to October 2002. Duties included developing the Equestrian Program comprehensive plan, budget, action plan and the actual start up of an equestrian program. In addition, it included aquiring everything an equestrian program needs (including the horses), plant facilities development, training of horses, start up of vendor accounts, organizing/starting the lesson program, etc. Lynn's Abbey Equestrian experience also introduced Riding as a Sport to the Portsmouth Abbey School. Although, Lynn currently studies Dressage and competes into Fourth Level, she possesses a unique depth of understanding and appreciation for all disciplines. She continually hones her craft by participating in Continuing Education, has ridden several times with Kim Walnes (USET Olympic Event Rider). Lynn continues her training with Ann Guptill (USDF Dressage Gold Medal and USDF Certified Instructor) of Fox Ledge Farm in CT, occasionally teaching there as well.
